The Three Hares hut is named after a mystical symbol of three hares chasing each other in a circle. It has its origins in 6thC China and is found in sites sacred to Buddhism, Islam and Christianity across Europe and Asia.
The Three Hares are found on roof bosses in many Dartmoor churches including Widecombe-on-the Moor and may be a sign of patronage by the tin mining community. The meaning is uncertain but the symbol is often associated with peace and tranquillity.
Hares may occasionally be seen in the fields of Kerswell Farm.
