Access Statement

This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to describe accurately the facilities and services that we offer all our guests/visitors.

Introduction

  • Situated in the heart of the South Hams, Kerswell Farmhouse is an idyllic place to stay for those seeking a quiet retreat or doing business in South Devon (Torquay 14ml/37min, Plymouth 28 ml/50min, Exeter 35ml/1hr). The ancient market town of Totnes and the beautiful port of Dartmouth are both 5.6ml/17min away.
  • Kerswell Farmhouse is located at 450ft above sea level and enjoys unparalleled views across open countryside to Dartmoor in the north-west. It is approached through a network of country lanes.
  • Kerswell Farmhouse offers two suites located in The Barn. The Bonberry Suite is on the ground floor with direct access from the courtyard and one internal step down. There is level access to the bathroom and shower and one step up into the sitting room. The Gosden Suite bedroom is accessed using a short, but wide, oak staircase with handrail. The sitting room is accessed through a separate door from the courtyard with one step down.
  • The breakfast menu offers a wide range of dishes. Food is locally sourced whenever possible.
  • Some breakfast ingredients may contain common allergens. If you have a food allergy, intolerance or sensitivity, please enquire when booking or speak to one of your hosts before ordering.

  • The nearest railway station is Totnes, which is 4 miles away. Direct trains to Totnes are available from London, Penzance, the Midlands and North and Scotland. Taxis are available at the station, but it is safer to book:

  • Cars may be hired from Simple Car Hire at Totnes Station (01803 431250). They will meet clients with the car outside the down platform building. Paperwork and payment are handled there.

  • The nearest airport is Exeter and others include Newquay and Bristol. Travellers should check services on the airport websites.

Arrival

  • Car parking spaces are available at the end of the gravel drive. The car park is well lit at night by motion sensing lights.
  • There are two steps to The Farmhouse front door and one to The Barn front doors.
  • Front doors are 850mm wide.
  • Assistance with luggage is available on request.
  • Guests are welcomed in the farmhouse hall, which has one further step up after which the ground floor is level throughout.
  • A bench seat, set against the wall, is available inside the hall.
  • Guests are escorted to their rooms and all facilities are explained to them.

Bedrooms

  • Two double suites are available in The Barn, a beautifully restored 18thC building. The Bonberry Suite is on the ground floor and Gosden Suite on the first floor. Both suites can be converted to twin-bedded format.
  • The Bonberry Suite enjoys a private sitting room with one step up from the bedroom. Double glass doors give on to a terrace with a table and chairs, and a small lawn and garden with views to Dartmoor.
  • The Gosden Suite has a spacious private sitting room on the ground floor one step down from the courtyard. It has double glass doors looking towards Dartmoor.
  • The Farmhouse and The Barn do not have lifts.
  • The height of all of the beds from the top of the mattress to the floor is 600-650mm.
  • The suites are discreetly lit with a range of occasional lamps. All rooms have bedside lamps with door and bedside switching.
  • The suites have goose-down duvets and pillows, pure cotton sheets, towels and bath robes by The White Company and Black Pepper & Sandalwood bathroom products by Odyssey
  • The suites have flat-screen HD Smart televisions/DVD players with remote control devices.
  • Free Wi-Fi with fast (Starlink) Internet access is available throughout Kerswell Farm.
  • Windows have slatted oak window blinds that can be opened and closed using a remote-control device.
  • There is under floor heating at Kerswell Farm which can be controlled in the suites using a thermostat.
  • The suite bedrooms have totally silent refrigerators.
  • Smoking and vaping are not permitted in any of the rooms at Kerswell Farmhouse.

Bathrooms

  • The suites have en-suite bathrooms with level entry walk-in showers.
  • All bathrooms and cloakrooms have hand-held douches next to the lavatory.
  • The lavatory pedestal height is 400mm.
  • The wash basin plinth height is 800mm.
  • Floors have ceramic tiles and level entry shower floors have non-slip tiles.
  • Bathrooms are brightly lit with LED spotlights and illuminated mirrors above the hand basins.
  • The doors to the bathrooms are 750mm wide.
  • All washbasins have lever taps.

Dining Rooms

  • The dining room is situated on the ground floor of the farmhouse which has two steps up from the courtyard and one step up in the hallway. From the hallway the ground floor is level throughout.
  • The door opening to the dining room is 1500mm wide,
  • Lighting is provided by LED candle bulbs adjusted by dimmer switches
  • Floors throughout The Farmhouse and The Barn are solid oak with occasional oriental rugs.
  • Breakfast is served individually at the dining table.
  • A cloakroom with lavatory and wash basin is located across the hall from the dining room. The door is 650mm wide.

Other rooms used by guests

  • The Farmhouse hall and The Barn stairs are well lit using a large number of ceiling spotlights.
  • All rooms open to guests have solid oak floors with under floor heating.

Additional Information

  • The grounds and footpaths of Kerswell have steep gradients and many steps in all directions with the exception of the small garden adjacent to the Bonberry Suite which is flat.
  • To the north, adjoining the meadow where the huts are situated, is a pond graduated from 0.5m to 1.5m in depth. Although children under 12 are not accommodated at the farmhouse, any temporarily visiting children should not be permitted to approach the pond unaccompanied by an adult.
  • A set of evacuation procedures is available in each guest bedroom.
  • If required please request on arrival that assistance be provided in the event of any evacuation.
  • The nearest General Hospital with an A&E unit is 14ml away in Torquay and the nearest Doctor’s surgery is 5.6ml away in Totnes. Please let us know if you require further information about these.
  • On the Kerswell Farmhouse website there is a list of nearby attractions and suggested inns and restaurant for dining.
  • The nearest post box is on the wall of The Old Smithy at Tideford on the road from Kerswell towards Dartmouth. The nearest post offices are at Harbertonford and Dittisham (in the Red Lion public house).The nearest cash machines are at Morrisons Supermarket in Totnes and Sainsburys in Dartmouth.
